Van Loon is committed to the Paris climate objectives, the company announced in a press release. Climate organization Science Based Targets has validated that the company is on track to achieve the targets with its current course. The company focuses on meat.
The company wants to show that it is also possible for the meat sector to reduce CO2 emissions to a level that fits within the climate agreement. According to CTO Roland van Loon, the company has been reporting the reduction of their emissions since 2010. By 2030, the company wants to reduce emissions by 2019% compared to 66. The chain concepts Pig at its Best and Beef at its Best play a leading role, as the company controls the entire chain of the concepts.
In addition to its own emissions, the company also wants to reduce those outside the company. This is because 46% of all emissions are generated indirectly. The company has set a target of reducing emissions from fossil fuel use by 46% and emissions from deforestation by 33%.
Meat remains central to protein strategy
CEO Robert van Ballegooijen indicates that meat remains the company's most important product. Because meat is an important source of nutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamins B1, B6 and B12, the role of meat will remain very important in the future. That is why the company focuses on hybrid products in the protein transition, where part of the product is replaced by a plant-based ingredient. The company is also a producer of meat substitutes.
