German pork price surprises and increases again

With a plus of 5 cents, the pig price in Germany rises to €2,20 per kilo. This is the highest level since September last year. The increase can safely be called a surprise. After all, it was expected that the market would remain stable for longer after the leveling off last week. The increase is followed by market leader Tönnies and probably also by the other major slaughterers in the country.

In the Netherlands we see stable slaughterhouse quotations this week. The renewed revival in Germany is nevertheless causing commotion in our market, because it requires a response. Especially because the German pig price had already moved some distance from the Dutch quotations. That is also what Germany is about, because the pig supply there is so tight that additional Dutch supply is desirable.

This also leads to additional exports of live pigs to Germany. In weeks 6 and 7, around 20.000 pigs went to Germany, which was barely 5.000 more than the same weeks a year earlier. But this doesn't really make any difference. Compared to the German slaughter figures, the higher numbers are 'negligible'. With 728.675 pigs, the German slaughter figure in week 8 was virtually the same as a year earlier, but at the same time it could also be described as tight.
