Pig market too lackluster for new price increases

15 March 2024 - Wouter Baan

The dynamics on the pig market have weakened considerably this week. Moreover, it does not look like pig prices will increase further in the run-up to Easter. The market is too balanced for that.

The pig supply is such that it is sufficient to properly meet the demand from slaughterhouses. The need for filled slaughter hooks is there, but not excessively great. There is no real pulling on the pigs. Traders say they are up to date with deliveries.

Competition from beef
Meat sales are somewhat similar to the live pig market. According to insiders, sales to retail are reasonably good, but not overly wild. Export demand outside Europe is also not strong enough to stimulate the market. Sales may pick up a bit in the last two weeks before Easter, but a rush is not expected this year. The competition from relatively competitively priced beef is too great for that. The prices of luxury pig parts such as tenderloins are on the rise this week, but the vast majority of carcass parts are moving sideways.

In week 10, the Dutch slaughter figure briefly peaked above the 300.000 mark, but in recent weeks we have been well below that again. We will probably see a slowly downward trend in the coming weeks, until the last week before Easter. It is striking that the average slaughter weight lost almost 2 kilos last week to 100.60 kilos. This means that the weights in a movement are back in line with previous years.

Despite the fact that German slaughterhouses pay relatively better than in neighboring countries, this apparently does not lead to additional supply. With 715.586 pigs, the slaughter figure was on the low side last week.

DCA Stock price remains stable
All in all, a stable pig price is a logical reflection of the market. Based on the statements, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 remains the same this week at €2,12 per kilo for the pigs slaughtered. The price of live pigs is also unchanged at €1,68.
