Piglet prices are still rising, spring peak is close

18 March 2024 - Wouter Baan

Pig prices have been stable for a few weeks after a period of increases, but upward price movements are still visible on the piglet market. The spring revival is not over yet. At least in the Netherlands.

The quotations on the German piglet market have not been out of place for a few weeks now. The level of €85 appears to be the ceiling for the VEZG piglet price, as long as pig prices do not rise further. That doesn't seem to be happening before Easter. There are still signals from the German market of a tight supply of piglets. Dutch traders speak of good export opportunities, both in Germany and Spain. In Spain the listing is still on the rise.

Lots of demand, but also resistance
There is also a lot of demand on the domestic market in view of the tight supply of piglets, although at the same time the resistance of fattening pig farmers is not insignificant. Still, many traders are calling for a further increase in the DCA BestPigletPrice. The main reason for this is to be able to curb the now sky-high surcharges a bit. To entice sow farmers to switch traders, generous bonuses are offered. In this regard, the position of the primary producer has improved considerably in the current shrinking market, but the situation sometimes causes tense situations among traders.

Record level
Based on the statements, the DCA BestPigletPrice will increase this week by €1 to €80 per piglet. This is a record level, after the existing record from the summer of 2023 was already equaled last week. Normally the spring revival will stop within a few weeks. Easter falls early this year and due to the cancellation of a slaughter day, this will have a dampening effect on the placement space. This may therefore be the last increase for the time being. Then it is up to the pig price again to realize the high piglet prices, but then the meat market must provide space. Apart from the luxury items, which are increasing in the run-up to Easter, the meat market is currently trading virtually flat.
