Pig prices are too tight to make an Easter sprint

22 March 2024 - Wouter Baan - 4 comments

In the last weeks before Easter, the pig market is not very exciting. The live market is in balance and the impulses from the meat market are not strong enough to cause pig prices to rise.

In the meantime, prices have been changing unchanged for a few weeks and this is in line with the current stable market situation. Knowing that Easter takes place next weekend, the market looks quite lukewarm. Perhaps it is because Easter falls quite early this year and spring weather has not yet really broken through in Europe, although temperatures are nevertheless rising. At least this is what some market insiders think.

Be that as it may, the grilling season hasn't started yet and the market needs that if it really wants to pick up steam. This is also reflected in the sales of carcass parts. Only the tenderloins are moving up. The rest of the carcass moves broadly sideways. In addition, some slaughterhouses claim that the prices of slaughter by-products to China are under pressure.

Loss of slaughter days
Few fireworks are expected on the market in the coming weeks. Good Friday is already a slaughter day in Germany. In addition, also on Easter Monday, just like in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. The meat industry is therefore taking its foot off the gas for a while after the Easter question has been answered. Because the pig supply is very tight, especially in Germany, this does not pose a threat to pig prices.

All in all, the DCA Stock Market Price 2.0 only has one direction left and that is sideways. This means a price of €2,12 for the slaughtered pigs and €1,68 for the live pigs. Possible price increases are certainly possible later this spring, but the meat market must first get moving. Market leader Tönnies, for example, indicates out loud that purchasing prices are quite tight. Other (Dutch) slaughterhouses also share this opinion. Last year at this time of year the pigs were more expensive than now: €2,24 and €1,77.
