The focus on the pig market shifts after Easter

29 March 2024 - Wouter Baan

Pig prices have certainly received some support from Easter this year, but the primary sector had hoped for more. The fact that Easter falls very early this year means that the effect was less powerful this year. The market focus is now shifting to warmer spring weather.

Pig prices have been unchanged for a few weeks now. This also characterizes the situation in the market, which is in balance. According to insiders, the pig supply in our country is neither ample nor tight, although the slaughter figures from last week are missing. The loss of a slaughter day at Easter can easily be absorbed. In Germany, where there is no slaughter on Good Friday either, this gives the tight supply an opportunity to improve somewhat. This is a good thing for the slaughterhouses there, as they have been confronted with a shortage of pigs for months.

Mixed signals
There are mixed signals from the meat market. Some parties are negative and claim that pig prices should be lowered. Other parties are less critical. In recent weeks, only the luxury parts have become more expensive, such as the tenderloins. However, this was not enough to stimulate the living market. The focus is now shifting to higher temperatures, which means the grilling season can start. Easter falls very early this year, which means that it will not coincide in 2024.

DCA Benchmark Price - Pigs
