Albert Heijn announces that it is investing in its pork chain. The company writes in a press release that it will support pig farmers with the stricter requirements of the Better Life quality mark.
From 2025, new stricter requirements will apply for the 1-star Better Life quality mark. For example, there should be more daylight in the stables and the pigs will have more space. These higher standards caused quite a stir, as... consultancy firm DLV found in a report at the beginning of this year that the new standards are unrealistic, because a closed company with five hundred sows must renovate for €300.000.
The supermarket plans to pay pig farmers compensation for the extra costs. This new policy is part of the Better for Nature & Farmer programme. The compensation takes the form of a surcharge of 6 euro cents per kilo. This compensation is a first step, but may not be enough. The DLV report estimates the additional price at 6,5 to 10 cents per kilo. Although Albert Heijn is one of the first supermarkets to compensate for the additional price.
