Weeks of truth for pork prices

31 May 2024 - Wouter Baan - 5 comments

The revival on the pig market is not yet continuing, although this was to be expected. In Germany, another slaughter day was canceled this week and the meat market has not yet gained enough steam due to the rainy weather to achieve further price increases.

With the month of June ahead of us, the moment of truth has arrived. The hope in the market is that pig prices can still take steps to compensate for the high piglet costs. This should happen next month, because then the disruptive effect of the summer holidays (which entails a drop in demand on the meat shelf on the domestic market) will not yet be an issue.

Good cards
The market has reasonably good cards in its hands in advance. The pig supply is not excessively large and will probably decrease further in the coming week, as is usual. Certainly if there are no more slaughter days, the shortage will probably be exposed more quickly. There is also a major sporting event on the agenda in June in the form of the European Football Championship in Germany. And later this summer the Olympic Games in and around Paris. Danish Crown said out loud this week that he expects a sales boost from this and other meat parties have also indicated this informally.

Weather market
The weather can make or break the meat market. When the sun finally breaks through and temperatures become summery, the demand for barbecue parts could be greater than ever. Until now, there has been little grilling in Northwest Europe due to the watery weather. The KNMI forecasts show drier weather, although it will remain on the chilly side for the time being.

We have to wait for sentiment to creep into the market. But just like the weather, this is fickle and often elusive. At the moment it is not enough for further price increases. This means that the DCA Exchange price for slaughtered pigs remains at €2,15 per kilo and the price of live pigs remains at €1,69 per kilo.
