African swine fever (ASF) has been found at a pig farm in Vorpommern-Greifswald (in the northern border area with Poland). The German Ministry of Agriculture announced this today (6 June). This is the first ASF infection on a German pig farm since the end of 2021.
According to the ministry, there are currently no signs of wild boar infections in the area. This is good news as far as the ministry is concerned, as the risk of spread is limited. Epidemiologists are investigating how the contamination could have occurred.
ASF remains a dormant threat on the European pig market. In 2023, the number of infections increased sharply, although the damage was limited to Croatia and Romania. The virus is also circulating among wild boars in Germany, and the virus is particularly problematic in neighboring Poland.
However, it has been a while since a German pig farm was hit. On November 15, 2021, a pig farm in Rostock was hit. However, at that time it was a very small hobby farm with eleven pigs. The company in Vorpommern-Greifswald, on the other hand, is a large company with 3.500 pigs.
