The Better Life quality mark benefits pig farmers

June 11, 2024 - Matthijs Bremer

Pig farmers who cannot meet the new standards for the Better Life Quality Mark of 2025 due to problems with their permit will receive a temporary exemption. According to the Animal Protection Society, problems arise with major adjustments. Due to the nitrogen problem, the granting of permits has come to a standstill.

From January 1, 2025, pig farmers who participate in the quality mark must meet stricter requirements. According to the Animal Protection Authority, most pig farmers can adapt their stables without a permit being required. However, sometimes new construction or major renovations are necessary. In such a situation, pig farmers run into problems.

Over the past year, Animal Protection received signals from various pig farmers who were in danger of getting into trouble. To prevent pig farmers from being forced to abandon the quality mark, the Animal Protection Authority decided to grant a postponement. In principle, this concerns a generic exemption until January 1, 2028, but in some cases it is possible to agree on a tailor-made exemption together. Exemptions can be requested until September 1.
