Vion has partly lost an export license outside the EU

5 July 2024 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

Vion has lost the NVWA recognition to be able to export from its head office in Boxtel to third countries such as China. The regulator temporarily suspended the license on Wednesday, July 3. Vion said in a response that it was very surprised.

The NVWA took this step following a regular inspection that took place at the end of last week. Comments were then made based on matters observed. Both Vion and the NVWA do not reveal exactly what was wrong. The meat company does say that adequate measures were immediately taken.

However, this did not prevent the NVWA from withdrawing the license to export to countries outside the European Union a few days later. It is not known for how long the license has expired. Vion does say that it is very surprised and that it is in discussions with the regulator.

Bloodletting
It is a loss for Vion that it cannot export pig parts from Boxtel to overseas destinations such as China, Japan and South Korea for the time being. About 90.000 pigs are slaughtered every week at the main site. The sale of pig parts outside Europe may no longer be as lucrative as a few years ago, but the yield per fattening pig easily amounts to €20.
