Vion has found a buyer for two locations in southern Germany. This concerns the slaughter and deboning locations in Vilshoven and Landshut. The shares will be transferred to Erzeugergemeinschaft Südbayern, which already had a 49% minority stake in these companies.
The news is not entirely surprising, because the German producers' association from Bavaria had already publicly indicated that it was very interested in these locations. When Vion announced in June that it wanted to leave Germany completely, unrest arose. Livestock farmers were afraid that a foreign party would buy up the shares. That has now been prevented. The location in Vilshofen has a slaughter capacity of 33.000 pigs and in Landshut 650 tons of meat is processed every week.
The producer organization has also shown interest in Vion's location in Waldkraiburg, in which they have no interest. It is not known whether that interest is still concrete. Erwin Hochecker, chairman of the producers' association, says in the press release that they want to supply cattle at that location in the future, which, according to German media, is the largest beef slaughterhouse in Europe.
At Vion they are happy that they have found buyers for two of the 11 locations that they want to divest in total. There is reportedly interest in the other locations. Vion indicates that the locations that have not yet been sold will continue on the same basis for the time being, until further decisions have been made.
In September, Vion will present its annual figures for 2023 and also an update on further plans.
