Vion is selling a large part of its beef activities in Germany to Tönnies. The meat company in Boxtel reports in a statement that the companies have signed an agreement in principle to this end. The acquisition amount has not been disclosed. The deal, which is expected to be completed in the course of 2025, fits in with Vion's strategy to focus primarily on the markets in the Benelux.
If the cartel authorities approve, Tönnies will take over Vion's beef activities at the production sites in Buchloe, Crailsheim and Waldkraiburg. Pork is also produced in Crailsheim and Vion will also sell this production facility to Tönnies. The deboning facility in Hilden and the hide processing activities of BestHides in Memmingen and Eching-Weixerau are also included in the transaction. Vion will retain its shares in the beef plant in Furth im Wald in southern Germany. Tönnies has indicated that it will continue the activities for the time being, while maintaining the established supply chains and customer relationships.
Honour existing commitments
"This proposed transaction is an important step in Vion's strategic reorientation," Ronald Lotgerink, CEO of Vion, said in the statement. "We have committed to finding the most capable partners to ensure a prosperous future development of the divested businesses and we have also committed to increasing our investments in the remaining businesses. We are now taking another step in delivering on our commitments."
A few weeks ago, Vion announced that it would close its pig slaughter and boning locations in Vilshoven and Landshut to reject.
