The pig farming producer organisation (POV) calls on owners of corn plots to pay close attention when harvesting corn. The reason is that there are often wild boars in corn plots, and when an infection occurs in the Netherlands, African swine fever (ASF) can spread quickly.
The danger of ASF infection has existed for years and the risks are not getting any less. There have been no infections in the Netherlands, but the risks are greater just across the border. According to the German Friedrich Löffler Institute, almost half of all 996 cases of animal disease are currently infections with ASF. As of September 11, the for 467 cases.
Most of these are in the state of Brandenburg, but many cases are also reported in Hesse. However, cases have also been reported in North Rhine-Westphalia. That is quite close to the Dutch border.
Bluetongue is the second most common animal disease in Germany, accounting for over 28% of cases.
