Pig price is back on solid ground

24 January 2025 - Wouter Baan

So far, 2025 has been extremely disappointing on the pig market, partly due to the outbreak of FMD in Germany. In addition, the large supply is exerting a lot of pressure, although pig prices are now less susceptible to the pressure and are also back on solid ground.

Nevertheless, the damage is quite considerable all in all: the German pig price (VEZG) fell by €0,20 in January and stabilised this week at €1,72 per kilo. This seems to be the bottom for the time being. For the first time in a long time, a batch of pigs (160 pieces) was traded on the German Internet stock exchange today for €1,76 per kilo. So there is still demand somewhere. Dutch slaughterhouses have reduced prices almost as much in recent weeks as in Germany, including the reductions at the end of December.

Offer remains ample
The supply of pigs is still very large and the weights record high, as we wrote earlier this week. The market still needs time to regain its balance. In the meantime, the demand for pork is not wild, although that is normal for this time of year. Now that the purchase prices have been significantly depreciated, it has become much more interesting for slaughterhouses to slaughter for the cold store, assuming that the bottom has been reached. How consumption will develop this year remains to be seen. Towards spring, there will undoubtedly be more demand on the market, which is very dependent on sales within Europe.

DCA Benchmark Price - Pigs
Based on the data, the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 for week 5 remains the same at €1,72 per kilo for the slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs changes unchanged at €1,35 per kilo.
