After significant depreciations for piglet prices at the beginning of this year, the market has started to rise again with the turn of the calendar. In the Netherlands, the DCA BestPigletPrice shows an increase that is also visible in other countries.
The DCA BestPigletPrice dropped below the €50 per piglet threshold for the first time in over two years two weeks ago, but is climbing back up to this level this week. The DCA BestPigletPrice is rising by €1 to €50 per piglet. The German VEZG piglet price is showing a similar rise to €46 per piglet. The German price rise is also somewhat reminiscent of a correction to (too) steep reductions in January.
Spanish export
The turnaround in the market is also due to a better demand for piglets, which is usual at this time of year. Piglets are being pulled a little more, without being rushed. Opinions differ on sales to Spain, but the export figures speak volumes. In the first four weeks, exports were 209.597 piglets, more than 20% above last year's level.
Total exports, on the other hand, are a fraction below last year's level, because Germany is importing fewer piglets. German demand is increasing again, now that the oversupply of pigs is slowly being reduced.
All in all, the supply of piglets (in terms of numbers) in the Netherlands is not very large, partly due to the wave of people quitting their piglets in the Netherlands.
