Houbensteyn Groep, one of the largest pig farms in the Netherlands, will participate in the LBV+ exit scheme. Due to changing political views, the owners of the company no longer see a future for large-scale pig farming in the Netherlands and are therefore calling it quits. This means that around 50.000 pig places (sows and fattening pigs) will disappear, spread over several locations.
The Company has announced the cessation of the pig activities in a statement. It states that the business climate for pig farmers in the Netherlands 'has become bad'. This is partly because the company has large locations that are no longer eligible to participate in the Better Life concept. This worsens the competitive position in the market.
All in all, the uncertainty is too great to burden any successors with, it is indicated. Moving the locations was also not an option. The company says it has made a careful assessment.
Employees lose jobs
At the end of this year, pigs will no longer be kept. The stables will be demolished and the employees (there were around 2021 in 45) will lose their jobs. According to them, a careful arrangement will be made for them.
With the termination of the pig activities within the Hoebensteyn Group, one of the largest pig farms in the Netherlands and the largest in Limburg will disappear. According to the company, it will also have an impact on the periphery of supplying and purchasing companies. The company hopes that the Dutch pig sector, after the downsizing that is coming, will be valued again.
