Difference in Dutch and German piglet prices is growing

10 March 2025 - Wouter Baan - 2 comments

Piglet prices continue to look upwards, with the rate of increase accelerating compared to last week. The good Spanish demand is driving prices up further. The DCA BestPigletPrice is further distancing itself from the German VEZG listing.

It is clear that the supply on the piglet market is very limited. If there is a couple left, Spanish integrations are quick to take them in, traders indicate. Demand from Spain remains strong as ever in mid-March. However, the export figure did take a step back in week 9, to just under 60.000 units. Historically still high, but a week earlier a record was reached with 76.473 piglets.

Domestic demand is also and remains strong, although resistance to the rapidly rising prices is also noticeable. However, those who do not want to miss out must go along with the rising market prices.

BPP above VEZG
The German VEZG listing is rising this week by €2 to €57 per piglet. In the Netherlands, the DCA BestPigletPrice is rising by €3 to €63 per piglet, further increasing the difference. Since the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Germany in January, the BPP has risen above the VEZG, which occurred sporadically in the past. For the time being, this situation seems to continue. The BPP is being supported by rising Dutch pig prices.

In Germany, the price of pigs remains unchanged at €1,72 per kilo for the time being. This price level is expected to remain the same until the end of March. Slaughterhouses and the producer association VEZG are said to have reached a compromise to bring more calm to the market around the outbreak of FMD.
