Pig price takes a big step up

28 March 2025 - Wouter Baan

The pig market is not finished yet. As slaughterhouses continue to outdo each other and the DCA Beursprijs far exceeded this week, the Dutch pig trade is aiming high for next week with a substantial increase.

The shortage is clearly noticeable on the Dutch pig market. The export of live supply to Germany has almost dried up, but even then slaughterhouses are unable to fill the hooks. With 293.170 pigs, the slaughter figure is not extremely low, but slaughterhouses would have preferred to slaughter more. By increasing the quotation slightly more than the competition, an attempt is being made to drag in the last load.

Meat demand is increasing
The demand for pork is good and increasing, and frozen stocks in Europe are low. Beef and chicken are expensive and sales benefit from that, although slaughterhouses are not yet noticing major shifts in demand in the fresh segment. There is good demand from the processing industry.

The Dutch pig trade smells blood due to the tight supply. The fact that the German Internet exchange has risen to €2 per kilo in the meantime is further fuelling sentiment in the market. It is expected that the German pig price (VEZG) will rise by at least 7 cents next week and that Dutch slaughterhouses will follow suit, partly to keep the pigs destined for Germany in the Netherlands. The price difference has made export less interesting.

Increase with correction
Based on the €0,05 plus of last week, the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 still has to make a correction. As a result, the statements show a plus of €0,09 to €1,97 per kilo for the slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs also increases by €0,09 to €1,55 per kilo.
