Pig prices level off abruptly as Easter approaches

11 April 2025 - Wouter Baan - 8 comments

The spring revival on the pig market has come to an abrupt end. In both the Netherlands and Germany, the market has flattened out this week. Now that the broken week around Easter is approaching, slaughterhouses are once again pulling the longest straw. The DCA Beursprijs, which led the way with a substantial increase last week, cannot avoid a correction.

After a rapid recovery in the past few weeks, pig prices did not rise further this week. Only Westfort increased a little. The flattening market was often not anticipated by the primary sector and also the pig trade, but it is accepted – albeit sometimes reluctantly. The idea is that the market can make a further step after Easter, partly because of the high beef and chicken meat prices. This can further strengthen consumption, which has already picked up.

In addition, the pig supply will continue to decline in May. First of all seasonally, and in our own country this is further exacerbated by the effect of the stopper regulations. But at the moment the shortage is interrupted by the approaching Easter weekend. On Good Friday there will be no more slaughtering in Germany, just like on Easter Monday in other European countries. For slaughterhouses that have been short of pigs in recent weeks, this is a pleasant interruption.

DCA Scholarship Price 2.0
Based on the data, the DCA Exchange Price 2.0 drops this week by €0,05 to €1,98 per kilo for slaughtered pigs. The price of live pigs drops by €0,04 to €1,55 per kilo. This correction is necessary, as the increase of last week has not been discounted in the slaughterhouse quotations.
