Pig price continues to rise on new wave

25 April 2025 - Wouter Baan - 1 reaction

The calm on the pig market around Easter was short-lived. The weekend is not over yet and pig prices are immediately rising again. A good demand for pork, combined with a limited supply, makes the market feel lively. The DCA Beursprijs 2.0 takes another step up.

It was not immediately expected that the pig price would pick up the upward trend again immediately after Easter. This is also quite unusual from a historical perspective. The undertone in the market is indeed positive, but the idea was that the market would recover further in May after the broken weeks. The revival in the market confirms the potential for growth that is present in the market. It is noticeable that Dutch slaughterhouses are somewhat more reserved than their German competitors, who made an extra 5 cents with a plus of 2 cents. In recent weeks, somewhat more pigs for meat went to Germany, although 6.510 head last week is still low compared to previous years.

Meat in high demand
The reason that meat sales hardly drop after Easter is because it fell rather late this year. The demand for pork is better at this time of year than usual, because the summer months are now somewhat closer. In addition, the supply of pork is also somewhat smaller seasonally. The weather will be a determining factor for the sentiment on the meat market in the coming weeks. In dry and sunny spring weather, the European demand for pork will be higher than in bad(er) weather.

Potential for growth
Despite the broken slaughter weeks (in Germany there will also be a slaughter day cancelled next week) the demand for pigs ready for slaughter is abundant. In Germany €2 is back on the signs, also in slaughterhouse quotations. We will have to wait in the coming weeks until the first slaughterhouses in our country will seek out this limit with their calling prices. Vion and Westfort are already quite close.

The market feels positive all in all. In the past two years, the market has been priced considerably higher at this time of year, which clearly shows the potential for growth. Especially with high prices for beef and poultry in mind, the market has excellent cards in hand to take some steps upwards in the coming weeks or months. Whether all expectations will come true, however, cannot be answered in advance.
