Pig prices cannot be controlled even with increased supply

2 May 2025 - Wouter Baan

The pig market is in the middle of a period with broken slaughter weeks, which camouflages the tight supply quite well. Nevertheless, price increases continue to have a grip on the market and further pluses are expected on the boards next week. The DCA Beursprijs 2.0 is therefore going up again.

In general, pig prices were stable this week. However, there are two changes that indicate that the market is not standing still: Van Rooi increased the calling price by 2 cents, in order to be somewhat better positioned compared to other slaughterers, with the legitimate aim of attracting pigs in a tight market. In addition, the Internet stock exchange rose by no less than 10 cents today to €2,15 per kilo. This suggests that the German pig price will take a step next week. An increase of 5 cents is seen as a feasible option and some even speculate about double that.

There were already rumors that the German VEZG quotation would already take a step up this week, but that did not work out in the end. Presumably because slaughterhouses, as a result of the broken weeks, could still draw on sufficient supply. After this week, the pig supply will decrease again. First in Germany and a week later also in our country. The supply of pigs also decreases seasonally.

Ask for pork
The tone on the pork market is quite positive. In the sense that there is eager demand for parts; especially for boned parts. The weather is crucial at this time of year for how the demand for grilled products in Europe will develop, but that is still an uncertain factor in the long term. In addition, it can be heard from the meat world that the parts prices are rising less rapidly than the purchase prices. This indicates that the pork prices cannot take giant steps upwards before the meat also moves along.

DCA Benchmark Price - Pigs
Traders are advocating an increase in the DCA Exchange Price 2.0, but also do not want to be too opportunistic. The price of slaughtered pigs increases by €0,02 to €2,03 per kilo. The price of live pigs increases by €0,01 to €1,59 per kilo.
