Tönnies has announced that it will close its ham production site in Ahlen, Germany. The company has announced that it will centralize all ham production at its headquarters in Rheda-Wiedenbrück as of June 1, 2025.
The relocation of the activities to Rheda-Wiedenbrück and partly to the site in Sögel (Lower Saxony) should increase the efficiency of the boning process. According to operational manager Frank Böckenkötter, the decision is inevitable: "We have continued to operate the site in Ahlen independently since the takeover, but we were no longer able to maintain the occupancy rate." With this, the company implicitly indicates that the lower number of pigs in Northern Europe is the main cause of the shortages.
Tönnies guarantees that customers will not notice anything of the reorganization. According to the company, delivery reliability and quality will remain guaranteed. The location in Ahlen will be gradually phased out. The majority of the 210 employees will move to the main location.
