Increase in pig prices still requires some patience

9 May 2025 - Wouter Baan

Things went a little differently than expected on the pig market this week. After all, the expectation was that the German pig price would rise on Wednesday and that Dutch slaughterhouses would follow suit. However, things went differently and the quotations are still moving sideways. Nevertheless, the increase that pig farmers so desire will come soon.

In retrospect, it may not have been a realistic expectation to think that pig prices would rise this week. After all, Germany is coming out of a period with no less than three broken slaughter weeks in a row, with the numbers remaining below the level of 650.000 slaughters in the past two weeks. As a result, there were more pigs available this week and that tempered sentiment.

Slaughters highest since early April
Despite a higher DCA stock price in week 19, a number of slaughterhouses in the Netherlands followed the German movement. Only Compaxo increased by 2 cents in response to Van Rooi a week earlier and Vion added a similar increase to the coupon. In the Netherlands, slaughtering was in full swing again last week, because we do not celebrate Labor Day here. The effect of the broken slaughter weeks was clearly visible then, because with 285.000 pigs, the number was the highest since the beginning of April. The weights also increased a step and have increased to 100,7 kilos.

A matter of time
In both the Netherlands and Germany, the supply of pigs will dry up again in the coming weeks, which probably offers room for higher pig prices. Perhaps next week in Germany, but in any case, an upward wave will most likely occur again before June. This has already occurred a few times in the past few weeks, but it did not come through properly in the end.

Positive trend in meat market
The sentiment on the meat market also remains predominantly positive. In North-Western Europe, the weather forecast is good for the time being. In Southern Europe, temperatures are also rising, but sometimes this is accompanied by rainfall. The latter is not favourable for sales, but nevertheless, sales volumes will increase up to and including the summer holidays, according to the market. However, buyers do not cover themselves for long periods, often a few weeks at most. Sometimes slaughterhouses are still inclined to portray the meat market as more negative than it actually is.

DCA Scholarship Price 2.0
After the increase of last week, the German price and the Dutch slaughterhouse quotations are the first to go, before the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 can climb again. Based on the information, the quotation for the slaughtered pigs remains at €2,03 per kilo, while the price of live pigs is unchanged at €1,59.
