Still a breakthrough on the pig market

21 May 2025 - Wouter Baan - 2 comments

Pig prices have been hesitating against an increase for a few weeks and now this is also a fact. The German pig price is taking a big step up and there is also movement in the market in the Netherlands, albeit at a more moderate pace. The increase is purely the result of a tight supply of pigs, the meat market is still somewhat hesitant.

With an increase of €0,10 to €2,10 per kilo, the VEZG quotation is reaching its highest level since last summer. The German price is also moving away from the long-term average. Such an increase had been on the cards for a while, but - somewhat surprisingly - has not happened so far. This was probably due to the broken weeks earlier in May, which somewhat camouflaged the tight supply.

The German slaughter figures for week 20 are not yet known, but a week earlier they barely exceeded 725.000, which can be considered low. This while in week 18 another slaughter day was missed. Conclusion: few pigs.

In the Netherlands, a mixed picture is emerging in terms of pricing. Vion and Westfort are both increasing by 4 and 5 cents respectively. At Vion, this is partly at the expense of the weekly surcharge of 2 cents. Compaxo is keeping the quotation unchanged, while Van Rooi has not yet announced the price. In an explanation, Vion speaks of an imbalance between the purchase and sales prices. Due to weak demand, there is even an oversupply within Europe, according to the market leader on the meat market.

Meat prices down
This picture also partly emerges when looking at the DCA pig mutations. This shows that the pork necks have fallen by 6 cents this week. In addition, the price of the shoulders fell by 3 cents. Meat prices may react upwards next week now that the pork prices are moving upwards.

The starting situation on the meat market for higher prices is not bad in any case with the summer months ahead and relatively tight frozen stocks. In addition, there are few pigs ready for slaughter in North-Western Europe, which will probably also stimulate the meat market. Especially when the barbecue weather rears its head.
