Several dead wild boars have been found in the German municipality of Kirchhundem (North Rhine-Westphalia), which may be infected with African Swine Fever (ASF).
The animals were found in the vicinity of a previously confirmed infection, about 150 kilometers from the Netherlands. Research The route to the carcasses is still running via the CVUA Westfalen in Arnsberg and confirmation from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute is expected.
Specialized search teams with dogs and drones have been working intensively since Saturday to track down more infected carcasses. State Minister of Agriculture Silke Gorißen emphasizes the importance of rapid action to prevent further spread of ASF. The aim is to demarcate a so-called infected zone, where restrictions will apply to hunting, dog owners and pig farms, among other things.
The infections have led to the establishment of a 15-kilometre protection zone, affecting ten pig farms.
Limburg warns
The province of Limburg is calling for extra vigilance after a case of African swine fever in Germany. Holidaymakers, farmers and hunters are urged to take hygiene measures, not to bring pig products and not to leave food scraps behind to prevent the spread.
