It was coming for a while, but now it has really happened: the German pig price has taken a big step down. The price dropped by no less than 15 cents to €1,95 per kilo. This is also the new calling price of the largest German slaughterhouse Tönnies.

The Dutch slaughterhouses responded to this with a significant decrease. Westfort lowered the price by 13 cents to €1,94 per kilo. Compaxo and Van Rooi took a similar step and ended up at €1,81 and €1,82 per kilo respectively. Vion lowered by 12 cents, to €1,89 per kilo. With this, all slaughterhouses follow the German quotation.

Over a period of two weeks, the price of all slaughterhouses fell by 15 cents. Vion lowered by 3 cents last week, while the other slaughterhouses lowered their prices by 2 cents.

Weak meat market
The sharp price drop is the result of disappointing demand for pork in Northern Europe. Despite expensive alternatives such as beef and poultry, sales remain weak. Since January, the DCA Exchange price has risen by 38 cents, but the carcass price lagged behind with an increase of 26,29 cents.
