The sharp drop in pig prices last week is also putting a lot of pressure on the piglet market. The downward trend that has been going on for almost two months now is gaining extra momentum this week.
Due to the sharp devaluation of the pig prices piglets have simply become less valuable in economic terms. Pig farmers were already very reluctant to purchase pairs and that is no longer the case due to the drastic price reductions.
Within the fixed links, trade is still going reasonably well, but there are many remaining lots hanging over the market for which there is no interest. Dutch piglet exports have also fallen below the long-term average in recent weeks.
Below long-term average
Based on the data, the DCA BestPigletPrice drops this week by €4 to €51 per piglet. This means that the listing is below the long-term average for the first time in months. A further decline is expected based on the difficult market situation and price trends in the past.
The German VEZG piglet price drops this week after a stable period by no less than €10 to €61,50. Such large reductions are not entirely unique, but they do occur rarely.
