The continued difficult sales of piglets has caused the Dutch piglet price to fall below €50 this week. Demand is also struggling at lower price levels.
The story of the piglet market is well known by now. It's not so much the fixed couplings, but rather a surplus on the free market that has created a depressed mood that has lasted almost three months. The unexpected plunge in pig prices has further compounded the situation. Free piglets are hard to sell throughout Europe, traders lament.
Before the crash, it was still thought that piglet prices could stabilize above €60, but this week the market fell back below the €50 mark, as expected. The DCA BestPigletPrice fell by €2,50 this week to €48,50 per piglet.
Bottom not yet reached
Last year, the price finally bottomed out at €48 per piglet in August, but we're likely to see a lower level this year. Where that bottom will be is difficult to predict at this point. Based on the long-term average, the price will fall below €40.
