Premium Food Group, the parent company of Tönnies, has appealed the blocked takeover of Vion's southern German beef slaughterhouses. Earlier this year, the takeover was blocked by the Bundeskartellamt (German Authority for Consumers and Markets).
Tönnies has decided to challenge the German antitrust watchdog's ruling in court. The company is also considering further action, including applying for ministerial approval from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs.
In an earlier statement, the company stated that it believes the assessment of its market position is incorrect. Furthermore, the company argues that a broader public interest is at stake. "This case affects nothing less than the future of sustainable livestock farming in southern Germany," Tönnies wrote in the statement.
Calls from farmers
The company states that it has received numerous urgent appeals from farmers and other stakeholders. The acquisition would help maintain slaughter capacity in Germany. "We continue to hope for a solution that satisfies all parties," the company writes.
Earlier this week, competitor West meat are also interested in Vion locations.
