Stable prices, but pressure on pig market increases

5 September 2025 - Klaas van der Horst

Pig prices, both live and slaughtered, seem set in stone. In the Netherlands and Germany, nothing has changed for a long time. Further south, in France and Spain, small cracks are becoming visible. The rising slaughter figures and higher slaughter weights are also putting pressure.

These phenomena are occurring in a situation of persistently weak demand. Meat prices are virtually unchanged in the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark.

As the holiday season draws to a close, demand for meat should increase, as should the price of meat.

What is increasing is the number of pig slaughters, both in the Netherlands and in Germany. Last week, 736.000 pig slaughters were recorded in Germany.

As if that weren't enough, the average slaughter weight of pigs is also increasing. So, there's plenty of meat available.

From this perspective, it's impressive that prices can still be held stable. The hope, meanwhile, is that the market will see some turnaround in the coming weeks and that demand will pick up. However, this isn't expected to lead to immediate price increases.

For now, the DCA Beursprijs 2.0 is heading for a flat price for the eighth consecutive week. The price for slaughtered pigs remains at €1,93 per kilo, and that of live pigs at €1,50 per kilo.
