Now that the pig market has (temporarily) stabilized, the new dynamics on the European market are becoming clear. In the Netherlands, the price of pork has fallen by far the most, according to European Union data.
Now that the market has remained stable for the second week in a row, it's a good time to consider the new dynamics on the European market. Eurostat data for week 42 has been available for most countries since this week. This is the week in which the market stabilized, as evidenced by, among other things, the DCA pig quotations and the DCA components monitor, which show a stable picture across the board.
The decline can only be described as very substantial. The European pork price has fallen by a whopping 17,8% since the summer. In week 26, the average price in the European Union was €220,23 per 100 kilos, but it has since fallen to €181,05.
Sharp declines in Northern and Southern Europe
Pork prices have fallen sharply, particularly in Northern Europe. In Germany, we're still seeing a relatively moderate decline: since the summer, the price there has fallen by 17,5%, slightly below the European average. In week 42, the price reached €180,98 per 100 kilos.
In Denmark, the decline was significantly sharper, at 21,2%, to €205,41 per 100 kilos. The Netherlands has not yet released data for week 42, but recorded a 25,7% decline in week 41, to €138,47 per 100 kilos.
While prices in Northern Europe have seen the biggest price shifts, prices in Southern Europe have also fallen sharply. The drop in France, which is relatively steep compared to other Southern European countries, is particularly striking. Prices there have fallen 16,5% since their peak this summer, to €172 per 100 kilos. In Spain, the price this week is 15% lower than at the height of the summer. This is partly due to a rebound in week 42, when the price rose 2,5% to €189 per 100 kilos.
Looking at Italy, we see, surprisingly, the opposite pattern. Prices there are not only rising, but are actually 16,4% higher than their lowest point this summer. The current price is €264,50 per 100 kilos.
