The United States is again allowing the import of Spanish pork, provided the product does not originate within a twenty-kilometer radius of the recent outbreak of African swine fever.
The decision is a significant boost for the Spanish pig sector. Exports to the country are relatively limited. In 2024, Spain exported 14.287 tons of pork to the United States. This was a record volume, but despite this, exports represented only 1,4% of exports outside the European Union, according to Eurostat data. However, the decision raises hopes that more countries will once again accept Spanish pork from outside the infected area.
However, it's not all good news. For the first time this week, the number of confirmed infections has risen to sixteen. However, all infections are within the existing contamination zone. The risk to the livestock sector remains limited for now. The 55 pig farms within the demarcated zone have recently been tested with PCR analyses, and no infections have been detected. The Catalan veterinary services continue to monitor the farms intensively.
