The peak in demand around Easter is over, but the market is still preparing for the barbecue season. To make a head start before the summer holidays, the good weather needs to continue, and it would be beneficial if it gets a bit warmer, especially on weekends or during the upcoming holidays. This could generate some extra demand due to barbecues and as consumers flock to outdoor terraces on a large scale.

However, it is a condition that this happens before the summer holidays, as the market always slumps somewhat because Northern European consumers go on vacation. Something that could alleviate this normal drop in demand somewhat is the high fuel price. This could flatten the drop in demand a little further.

Dutch Pork Index remains unchanged
The DCA Dutch Pork Price Index remained unchanged again this week at €1,48. This marks the fourth consecutive week with the price remaining the same.

In practice, the pig price has actually remained unchanged for slightly longer. The increase implemented in week 12 was the result of an adjustment in the way Compaxo reports its prices. That week, the slaughterhouse incorporated part of the surcharges into the base price.

Piglet index also remains the same
Meanwhile, the DCA Dutch Piglet Price Index falls by 3 cents. The decrease is so small that it is not clearly visible to the naked eye in the chart. The slight decline is the result of seasonal price pressure. Spanish demand for Dutch piglets continues to fall, as the country has placed virtually all piglets to meet the extra demand of the tourist season.
