Growers give onions for turning away

14 April 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 3 comments

The 30% to 60% coarse grading trades on the Emmeloord stock exchange from 0,00 to 0,01 euros. Many growers give their onions to the sorter for zero cents with the option of getting a little extra payment, but that looks more like a dead sparrow than the reality', says trade fair manager Maas van den Heuvel.

dear onion growers! give your onions away for free , they will have fun , there will surely be someone who will benefit from it again ! the sun rises for nothing, in the store you still pay one euro! they eat but not onions if I have to deliver them for nothing, rather let them rot! farmers think again !!!

New ones are just above. Sand only needed at the end of August. We'll see, it will probably be better than now.

If they don't bring in anything now and they don't do anything in 1 or 2 months, this 'waiting' has COST YOU NOTHING. There is a chance that they will increase slightly, because it is impossible to fall further than now. Then you are completely out of your head to give them now for nothing? What do you want to accomplish with this ? Can't stand the uncertainty?
I think it's really crazy to put those onions on the market anyway; with this you screw it up for someone else who can muster the discipline to wait.
See how the tree nurseries in Opheusden are doing; when prices are bad, there is still harvesting and silage. If they can't get a 'normal' (above cost) price, they are stoked. NEVER give it to the trade for nothing, because how can you maintain next year that you want a higher price than last year?
The big gritters really laugh at how stupid farmers are...

Why should I keep them so that someone else will give them away later and I have to dispose of them at a cost? No one can predict the market so make your own decision.

People do think for themselves about what you do or don't do. Don't forget that we are currently competing with onions in great competition with each other and not with other countries. Growing onions in the future will be left to those who do it best.

Think carefully about the sacrifices this may cost to stay in the game.
