BB TV: Jaap Hanekamp

The effect of agriculture on the environment cannot be measured

June 27, 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 4 comments

In June, scientist Jaap Hanekamp published a study into ammonia concentrations in the air. The outcome of his research is at odds with the ammonia studies of Wageningen UR, on which Dutch manure policy has been based for 30 years. Hanekamp: "The uncertainty is many times greater than has been reported so far."

If making policy can be that easy, something is wrong

When will the penny drop with the policymakers that they conduct policy based on emotion and incorrect figures. Driving away farmers, chasing farmers and moving food production to other parts of the world, which are much less efficient.

Stop making policy based on wrong facts and assumptions. It's like acid rain, which turned out to be non-existent.

There is far too much "research" to order in the Netherlands:
"Man is bad for nature" => "The farmer is in nature" => "the farmer has to leave"
And the WUR has to deliver the "casus belli"...

Soil science and fertilization theory is a fascinating subject. You can view this in several ways.
From the agricultural sector it seems that every farmer is being asked to move or close the company. This is nonsense.

We are now at a crossroads in the agricultural sector. We should move towards a more effective manure policy.
If it can be used immediately for soil life and to improve the clay-humus complex and can therefore be immediately absorbed by the plant, it will be better for every sector. We produce a lot, but things are really going so well. No. Most of it is focused on money and not on quality with a view to the future for every person, including farmers.

The fact is that more nitrogen is coming into the Netherlands through the import of (tropical) animal feed than is going out through products. The rest ends up in the environment. What I do not understand is that the sector wants to maintain that system, knowing that there are also forms of agriculture that are in balance and knowing that fossil fuels and phosphate stocks are running out.
Circular agriculture also provides more nutritious and safer products, something that a growing group of consumers find very important and are willing to pay extra for. Why not join this transition?
