'CBS does not have a market-disrupting effect'

25 February 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 9 comments

At the beginning of February, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) made the final harvest estimate of seed onions known. Those figures caused a lot of commotion, because the figures from Statistics Netherlands would have a distorting effect on the market. Cor Pierik, agricultural spokesperson for CBS, goes there in this episode Boerenbusiness Facts further in.

This is a response to this article:

In October 2017, various media presented the figures incorrectly. See for example the message from Boerenbusiness of October 31 with the title "Onion harvest 2017, largest in history"
This compared the provisional figures for 2017 with the definitive figures for 2016.
This led to the conclusion that there would be 241000 tons more onions than last year.
As Cor Pierik says in the video, this is comparing apples with oranges!

It is sweeping its way nicely, during the preliminary harvest estimate it was already known for a long time that onions had to be destroyed in South Holland due to a calamity, so you can't come to that with the final harvest estimate

Does anyone have any idea what CBS bases its estimate on?
I don't think it comes close to wet finger work!

Maybe BB's editors can sort this one out? At least then we know where the leak is

Doesn't really matter to me, but due to the digital supply (v/h.meicounting with the pen) the accuracy is hard to find, so if CBS says, can't be better, then they have to stop, or adjust the statement s down instead of annually to the top. Numbers are always at the expense of the farmer, read the statements of min. Schouten about the roundup of the NVWA.

That was also read on BB yes http://www.boerenbusiness.nl/ artikel/10875750/geen-enkel-product-na-esso-brand-in-voedingsketen. Then everyone can draw their own conclusion instead of blaming the CBS. Sad.

I also don't like the mandatory CBS survey to complete. They can get this information THEMSELVES from the combined statement, but they are too LAZY for this!!!!

Wouldn't those authorities even stop playing the market?
This has been happening with the grains for years, now it is the turn of the free market products how long can we take this?

according to weekly farm, CBS's harvest forecast is based solely on a Delphy estimate. So no measurement or the like, but wet finger work.

We as a sector benefit from that!
