'Seed potato fraud is stupid, because innovation is crucial'

23 May 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 4 comments

"Seed potato fraud is stupid, because the history of seed potato breeding shows that innovation has been very important. A good reward for the grower is part of this," says Jan van Loon, who obtained his PhD on an investigation to the history of seed potato breeding.

Good afternoon Mr Loon,
About 45 years ago I was allowed to do and complete my graduation assignment, with you as a mentor, at Cebeco in the Flevopolder. When I now hear you speak like this, you have not changed in tone and content. My love for potato cultivation has always remained and I have also grown it myself.
I completely agree with you that we as the Netherlands - also broader than the potato - have a leading position. However, politics does allow us to maintain this position and, if possible, expand it further, compared to our competitors elsewhere in the world.

Too bad this is the title above the piece. Mr. van Loon has so much to say and has contributed so much to potato cultivation around the world. In my opinion, however, the fraud has nothing to do with the deliberate evasion of plant breeders' rights, but everything to do with the abuse of power by the large French fries factories and the trading houses that allow this to happen.

What is the benefit to an individual farmer nowadays if an innovative variety comes onto the market? The production of net product per hectare increases and so the cost price per kilogram of product decreases. As a grower you would like to grow such a potato and paying 1 to 2 cents of plant breeder's rights is then really no problem. The margin for the trading house is also solid, but not the biggest problem.
The problem is that the poters are only available in combination with a strangle contract. A contract in which you receive the cost price for the first 40 tons and you have to wait and see what comes your way for the over barrels. The 5ct between cat1 and cat2 says enough.

Fraud is wrong and must be combated, but fraud is provoked by the current system.

Innovation has come to a complete standstill in the EU because Crispr-CAS is not allowed.
The fiddling with traditional breeding methods is not going to yield anything innovative. What really stands out in the EU/NL is that people tinker around a lot about trivial things and keep getting stuck in the same circle. New ideas and techniques are already drilled into the ground in advance because oh woe what if it were dangerous. Fear reigns and leadership is gone.
