The plot in Middenmeer is 9 hectares of clay soil and has not been plowed this year. A look at this participant in the Crop Tour 2020 from the air and from the back. The tuber setting is compared with that of 2019.
The grower in Middenmeer (North Holland) is satisfied with the stand this year. "There is more foliage on the plot than last year. Due to the non-inversion tillage, more moisture was present during planting. Furthermore, the soil life is well activated and green manure residues are easily found in the soil."
The position of the plot is fairly even. There are no major differences with 2019. In both 2019 and 2020, it was rained twice. Last year 2 times for growth and this year 2 time for tuber setting and 1 time against the heat. "There are some jobs that are less open, I suspect this is due to the transport of boxes during the bulb harvesting last year. The ground may have been compacted a bit more than we expected," explains the grower.
The potatoes grow well during this period. The grower is therefore satisfied, but hopes that there will not be too much heat. The current Dutch climate is good for growing potatoes. If there is real heat, the grower will be less pleased. "I hope it stays that way. The potatoes must remain healthy and this climate must remain. There must not be too much heat because that is not beneficial for the potatoes."
