'Carbon Credits are interesting for a farmer right now'

14 September 2023 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 2 comments

The market for Carbon Credits is gaining momentum, notes Erik Jan van Huet Lindeman of Dutch Carbon Company. According to him, dairy farmers would do well to get involved now. Current prices of €100 to €125 per carbon certificate are probably only at the lower end of the market. We delve deeper into the matter with Van Huet Lindeman.

Assume this is an April Fool's joke? There is already grassland there now, so the environment is not any better.

Every little bit helps, and the soil benefits, as has been said, but it doesn't contribute much. If all farmers in the Netherlands capture one and a half times as much carbon as they do now, they will capture 2 tons of CO2 per hectare (double what is mentioned as an example in the interview). This compensates for CO2 emissions for 360.000 Dutch people, the residents of the city of Utrecht (the average Dutch person produces 10 tons per year. After about 10 to 20 years, a new balance is created in the soil and the extra build-up stops. Agriculture can produce its own do not compensate for emissions, let alone contribute to the bigger picture. It's a pity, but unfortunately, it is agriculture, we do not manage a swamp where carbon was naturally stored, but a soil with a principle balance between construction and decomposition.
