Converting manure into biogas is possible starting from just 100 cows

15 April 2026 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 13 comments

The potential of manure as an energy source is significant, but practice is lagging behind. Anaerobic digestion and green gas have been cited for years as a logical step in the energy transition within the agricultural sector. Yet, scaling up proves difficult, and many initiatives get stuck in the development phase. How do you create scale and how do you manage the risks? We put this question to René Cornelissen, Director of CCS Energie-advies. This interview is part of the Energy Special van Boerenbusiness.

It is possible with as little as one cow. It just depends on who pays the bill: subsidies, the consumer, or ultimately the farmer himself?

No, that is not necessary either. Sometimes you can tell that a company is making money by looking at how it has been doing something for years and how it is developing.

You really should read the article published in Solar&Storage magazine this week. The headline reads: Energy cooperative projects often not profitable. Many projects operate at a loss despite receiving a great deal of subsidy.

Is that about biogas then? Biogas seems to have potential due to the upcoming blending obligation. And gas isn't going to get dirt cheap anymore, is it?

The gist of the article is simple: on paper, it all looks good, but in practice, things are considerably more stubborn. On top of that, initiators often underestimate costs and overestimate revenues.

You have too many variables over which you have little to no influence.

I have seen more of them dealing with fiascos and misery every day than those earning a good living from it carefree. I know a few who would love nothing more than to shut it down, but are obliged to keep going because the subsidy is still on it.
