Sales of fine onions are very sluggish, while there is ample demand for large onions. Consequently, the prices of fine onions continue to fall, whereas large onions remain stable.
The sorters' working stocks are small. They therefore have to repurchase regularly. There is ample supply, because quality is declining.
Consequently, purchase prices remain stable at around 10 to 14 cents per kilo. However, grower prices for red onions are falling. This is because sales opportunities are limited in a relatively small market.
